Lesson 02: Market Structure - Complete Analysis

Master institutional Smart Money Concepts (SMC) and ICT to decode market trends and liquidity sweeps.

This lesson is prepared using international-level sources, with maximum accuracy and in an easy-to-understand format. You can get maximum benefit from this!

๐Ÿ“Š Market Structure Framework

Any financial market, whether Forex, Crypto, or Stock, operates in 3 primary phases:

1. Buy Trend (Up Trend)

When a market moves from bottom to top (from the down side to the up side), we say the market is on the buy side.

  • High: The highest point created as the market moves.
  • Higher High (HH): When the market breaks the previous High and moves further up.
  • Higher Low (HL): The market doesn't move in a straight line; it moves in Waves. When it breaks a High and moves up, the Low point formed during that retracement wave is called a Higher Low.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Golden Marking Rule: In an Up Trend, we first mark the Higher High (HH) point. Then, we mark the Higher Low (HL).
Up Trend Structural Swings

2. Sell Trend (Down Trend)

When a market moves from top to bottom (from the up side to the down side), we say the market is on the sell side.

  • Low: The lowest point created as the market moves.
  • Lower Low (LL): When the market breaks the previous Low and moves further down.
  • Lower High (LH): When it breaks a Low and moves down, the High point formed during that retracement wave is called a Lower High.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Golden Marking Rule: In a Down Trend, we first mark the Lower Low (LL) point. Then, we mark the Lower High (LH).
Down Trend Structural Swings

3. Consolidation (Sideways Range)

Here, the market moves within a specific price boundary without establishing a directional bias.

  • Equal Highs: Similar resistance levels building liquidity pools above.
  • Equal Lows: Similar support levels building liquidity pools below.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Market Structure on Candlestick Charts

Because we trade on Candlestick Charts, we must identify true structural breaks accurately using the Golden Rule.

โš ๏ธ Invalid Breakout (Liquidity Sweep)

If a previous structural swing (HH, HL, LL, or LH) is broken only by the Wick of a candle, it is NOT a Valid Breakout. It is merely a liquidity grab.

Invalid Breakout Wick Sweep

โœ… Valid Breakout (True Body Close)

A true structural breakout occurs only when the Body of the candle closes beyond the previous level (HH, HL, LL, LH).

Valid Break of Structure Body Close

๐Ÿ”‘ Final Pro Checklist:

  • Always remember: On Candlestick Charts, a valid break of structure is validated exclusively by the Body close, never the Wick. Do not fall for wick sweeps!
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Multi-Timeframe Alignment: Always map the primary Market Structure on Higher Timeframes (4H, Daily), then refine your precise Entry on Lower Timeframes (15M, 1H).
