๐Ÿ“Œ What is a CHoCH (Change Of Character)?

The definitive institutional signal that an ongoing trend has terminated and is reversing is known as a CHoCH (Change of Character) or Market Structure Shift (MSS). While a BOS denotes continuation, a true CHoCH prints the first structural crack.

๐Ÿ’ก Terminology: On charts, traders abbreviate this pattern as CHOCH or MSS. We will use the standard institutional designation CHoCH throughout this masterclass.

1. Down side CHoCH (Uptrend to Downtrend)

Occurs when an expanding Up trend violates and decisively breaks below its most recent validated Higher Low (HL).

  • Structural Rule: The reference HL must have formed a confirmed Higher High (HH) after it. Otherwise, roll back to the prior structural low.
  • First major indicator that buyers have exhausted liquidity and institutional sellers are dictating price.
  • Following this break, market structure shifts to printing lower highs (LH) and lower lows (LL).
  • Offers a premium, high-probability environment for short (Sell) executions on pullbacks.
Downside Change of Character (CHoCH)

2. Up side CHoCH (Downtrend to Uptrend)

Occurs when a declining Down trend violates and decisively breaks above its most recent validated Lower High (LH).

  • Structural Rule: The reference LH must have produced a confirmed Lower Low (LL) after it. Otherwise, roll back to the prior structural high.
  • First major indicator that sellers are exhausted and institutional capital has stepped in on the buy side.
  • Following this break, market structure begins engineering higher lows (HL) and higher highs (HH).
  • Offers a premium, high-probability environment for long (Buy) executions on pullbacks.
Upside Change of Character (CHoCH)

โš–๏ธ The Golden Rule: CHoCH Confirmation (Body vs Wick)

The single determining factor separating genuine institutional reversals from retail traps:

  • โœ… Valid CHoCH: The candidate candleโ€™s Body must close cleanly beyond the reference swing level. Only then is market character truly shifted.
  • โŒ Invalid CHoCH (Fakeout): If only the Wick breaches the level before price snaps back, it is merely a liquidity purge, not a structural shift.
  • Always remember: Without an unambiguous candle body close outside the key structural level, no reversal confirmation exists.
