Lesson 05: Major and Minor Market Structure

Understanding the difference between Higher Timeframe and Lower Timeframe Market Structures.

What are Major and Minor Market Structures?

One of the most important concepts in SMC and ICT strategies is identifying Major and Minor Market Structures. If you understand this properly, you can accurately understand the true direction of the market.

โฐ Marking Market Structure by Timeframe

When you mark market structure on your Higher Timeframe (HTF), they are considered Major structures. Structures marked on the Lower Timeframe (LTF) are considered Minor structures.

  • For example: If you mark market structure on a 1H chart, they are considered Major structures.
  • Then, structures marked on the 15m chart are considered Minor structures.
  • Practical Example: If there's a Higher High on the 1H chart, it's considered a Major Higher High (MHH).

๐Ÿ“Š Major Structures - Definitions

HH (Major Higher High): The highest high formed on the Higher Timeframe.
HL (Major Higher Low): The highest low formed on the Higher Timeframe.
LL (Major Lower Low): The lowest low formed on the Higher Timeframe.
LH (Major Lower High): The lowest high formed on the Higher Timeframe.
Major BOS: When a Major structure breaks.
Major CHOCH: When the Major trend reverses direction.

1. Up Trend - Major Structure

In an Up trend, the market moves upward forming Major Higher High (MHH) and Major Higher Low (MHL).

Up Trend Major Structure

2. Down Trend - Major Structure

In a Down trend, the market moves downward forming Major Lower High (MLH) and Major Lower Low (MLL).

Down Trend Major Structure

3. Major BOS (Break of Structure)

When a Major Higher High breaks in an uptrend, or a Major Lower Low breaks in a downtrend, it's considered a Major BOS.

Major BOS

4. Major CHOCH (Change of Character)

When the market trend completely changes (from Up trend to Down trend or vice versa), it's considered a Major CHOCH.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Minor Market Structure

Small structures formed between Major structures are called Minor structures. These help with your analysis.

  • In Up Trend: Small Highs and Lows formed between Major Higher Low and Major Higher High are called Minor Higher High and Minor Higher Low.
  • In Down Trend: Small Highs and Lows formed between Major Lower High and Major Lower Low are called Minor Lower High and Minor Lower Low.

5. Minor CHOCH - Detailed Example

When a Minor Lower High breaks, it's considered a Minor CHOCH. This helps you find entry points.

  • When Minor Higher Low breaks: It's considered a Minor CHOCH.
  • When Minor Lower High breaks: It's also considered a Minor CHOCH.
  • Practically: When Minor CHOCH forms, a small reversal occurs in the market.

6. Minor BOS and Minor CHOCH

Minor structures also form BOS and CHOCH. These help you find entry points.

  • Minor BOS: When a Minor structure breaks. This can be up side or down side.
  • Minor CHOCH: When the Minor trend reverses direction.
  • Example: When a Minor Lower High breaks, it's considered a Minor CHOCH.

๐Ÿ” Understanding Major vs Minor Difference

The main difference between Major and Minor structures is the timeframe. These change according to the timeframe you work on.

  • Major: Structures marked on Higher Timeframe (1H, 4H, Daily).
  • Minor: Structures marked on Lower Timeframe (5M, 15M).
  • Your analysis: First mark Major structures, then mark Minor structures.

๐ŸŽฏ Practical Application

In your analysis, first mark Major structures on the Higher Timeframe. Then mark Minor structures on the Lower Timeframe to find entry points.
